This is a rethorical question, so no need to spout insults about how unrealistic, unsafe it would be. I am more interested in the raw mechanics of it. (and a "one off" exploit, not doing the stuff below all the time).

All of the orbiters (except Challenger) have gone through Orbiter Maintenance Down Periods (OMDP) at Palmdale, California before 2002. Just about every spaceflight immediately before an orbiter's trip to Palmdale landed at Kennedy Space Center.
