From purely an energy budget point of view,
Suppose the shuttle (or CEV) were to be lifted by a giant balloon to say
60,000 feet before being released and igniting its engines...

In yesterday's Debris Verification Review, Wayne Hale talked about the
new instrumentation on the shuttle stack to monitor foam loss and loads
on the modded areas of the tank during ascent.  One of the things that
he mentioned was "six new cameras on the stack".  Does anyone have a
