When these orbiters finally fly, they will have been on the ground for almost four years. Is anything being done to make sure that lack of flying time hasn't made the orbiters "stale" or "rusty" or subject to problems?

There have been manyu discussions, trial balloons etc about the future of the shuttle. Would it fly only twice a year for MPLM and crew exchanges, woudl it fly 6 times a year ? Would it go to Hubble, would it complete the station, partial completion ?

The labelling of shuttle missions involves the abbreviation "STS" plus a number. This number does not chronologically increase from flight to flight but varies in a remarkable way. Could anyone please explain the concept of numbering the missions to me?
