How long will it take to shut down the shuttles23 Sep 2004 03:02 GMT7
With the station likely being unmanned, if its decided to never send another
crew the shuttles are a goner too.
Whats involved in shuttering the program and where will the orbiters be
residing?

Here's a theory on contributing causes of the destruction of Columbia which
I hadn't heard before.  This article was published about a week after the
loss:

Vandenberg AFB runway mods for shuttle22 Sep 2004 20:03 GMT2
Interesting. Note large turn-around at north end, the long length, and
the tow-out path at the south.

ACES Status During STS-107 Re-Entry20 Sep 2004 21:15 GMT26
Sorry if this issue has been raised before, but I'm curious. I've just
been reading through the CAIB report again and on Page 77 Volume 1
"STS-107 Crew Survivability" it notes that during the accident ACES
suits were not being correctly worn by all crewmembers. Three were not

More Columbia debris found in Texas20 Sep 2004 11:56 GMT7
The story says a six-foot piece of the crew compartment that contains a
"hinged window" was found. Can anyone with knowledge of what windows
have and have not been found take a guess at what window this might be?

Unusual payloads19 Sep 2004 21:28 GMT2
This 1998 CNN/Associated Press article gives a hint about "lightweight
items taken on each shuttle flight for the novelty of being in space":

Oh dear, anyone want an unused parafoil?17 Sep 2004 17:55 GMT11
Well, I hope they can salvage something from Genesis. It is indeed
comforting that the deployment system on the capsule is not used on manned
missions.
Maybe the battery was a dud...
Issues and  comments16 Sep 2004 11:23 GMT12
Noting the new contracts given to companies for 'ideas' on Lunar
exploration, makes me a little worried. we had space plane ideas, and single
stage to orbit demonstrators etc etc, loads of money is spent for little
real gain.
Whats the estimated cost of a new capsule based manned launcher?15 Sep 2004 19:31 GMT1
Any dollar estimates?
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
whether or not the orange suits15 Sep 2004 14:26 GMT10
An issue was recently raised as to whether or not the orange suits
(ACES, not the LES) could keep shuttle astronauts alive in the vacuum
of space.  I am not aware of any reason why they could not. I expect
that they could be as effective as Ed White's EVA suit.
