does anybody know whether the shuttle could be used for moon trips or even mars , is it not possible to use the cargo bay for extra fuel or accommodation during extended space flights???

Lets say theres a problem on reentry, where the landing gear may not deploy:( For safety the crew is ordered to bailout, but what happens to the vehicle? They arent sure if it can land safely. At last reports here it could land automatically except for the gear down command.
