The next person on the moon25 Jul 2006 18:59 GMT5
I assume NASA already has a list of astronaut candidates for the next

What chance to you give for many to reach mars in the next 50 years?24 Jul 2006 11:38 GMT8
50%? 20%? I guess the answer is really what chance is there that a space
race will develop, as there doesn't seem to be any point in going to mars
other than bragging rights.
CM at KSC24 Jul 2006 03:39 GMT2
Outside at the KSC visitor's center, they have the LC39 walkway
leading up to a CM.  Does anyone know what this CM is?  (Boilerplate,
unused CM, unmanned flight, etc)

I'm re-watching "Apollo 13" for around the thirtieth time, and have a
question:
What the hell is a "helium disc" and why is is it no big deal if one bursts?

Chandra leftovers and Shuttle-launch views21 Jul 2006 03:02 GMT3
I just learned this interesting tidbit of hardware recycling:
One of the numerous things the CAIB report pointed out was the very
poor and patchy quality of ground-0based imagery of the STS-107
launch. Two of the cameras in the best position to see the foam strike
Who was first to go "doody" on the moon?20 Jul 2006 20:43 GMT5

Shuttle as ASAT: real possiblity or Soviet paranoia? 20 Jul 2006 08:53 GMT15
When I was an undergrad, I recall reading some books by folks like Steven Zaloga and David
Isby where, when the Soviet air defense and anti-satellite systems were discussed, the
Soviets tried to claim in arms treaty negotiations that the shuttle was a potential ASAT. The
Soviets ...

In a nation of immigrants, the child is automatically more of an American
than his parents.... Americans regard children as what Mr. Hudson in
"Upstairs, Downstairs" called "betters." Aping their betters

Can the Shuttle land unmanned?17 Jul 2006 02:06 GMT42
If the crew of the upcoming mission have to abandon the Shuttle, can it then
attempt to re-enter and land unmanned?  Or does it require human piloting?
I remember that the Buran landed quite successfully in its only flight.
Thanks!
Still more Apollo naming confusions15 Jul 2006 21:31 GMT4
I was reading bits of Apollo By The Numbers, published at
