Soyuz-1 terminal velocity31 Dec 2004 04:20 GMT20
Read quite a bit now about Komarov and Soyuz-1 and something doesn't
stack up to me regarding the speed the capsule hit the ground.
We know the parachutes didn't open, but the various website and books
I've read estimate the terminal speed to be 500mph, 450kph, 40m/s,

Q: Sri Lanka tidal wave & Sir Art's status`30 Dec 2004 03:23 GMT26
...IIRC, someone here mentioned a long while back that they were in
contact with Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Seems we've had reports of
earthquake-originated tidal waves nailing the coastline of Sri Lanka,
and IIRC Sir Art was living on the coast down there.

Strongest NASA Managers - Lanzkron29 Dec 2004 05:17 GMT4
One of my favorite passages in Thomas Kelly's book, Moon Lander, was
about a certain manager at NASA who galvanized efforts at two major
contractors to shape up their ground support equipment (GSE) programs.
I'm hoping others will share additional information or similar stories.

I find I'm having to add more and more people to my killfile which is
sad as some of them may have useful information at some point, which I will
then miss !
Any chance we can get the above NG up and running for the new year, so

Were any woman astronauts, past or present, smokers?
Night time or weather pics from any of the Mars landers?27 Dec 2004 20:16 GMT4
I've seen lots of spectacular images produced by the various Mars rovers and
their landers, and by the Viking landers in the 70s, but all the images
appear to be taken during daylight and 'good weather' hours.
Is this some kind of technical, lighting, or temperature issue, or have I

I spent today reviewing my notes on The Fire, and I have a question for
those of you who are fond of calling me a "troll."  According to NASA's
official timeline, at 2336 (all times GMT):  "Hatches opened, outer
hatches removed.  Resuscitation of crew impossible."  At the very same
