Shuttle/External tank idea had this book as a kid? Circa 1959:

Space does not exist !!!29 May 2004 17:45 GMT7
All the stories about space are bogus, there is no space! All the
planets are attached to the skies and the skies are standing on two
giant pillars. And the earth is a disc.
Space is rubbish, nonsense, crap.
Retarded question raised by Disney's "Man in Space" series29 May 2004 15:46 GMT1
So the captain of the moon craft asks his crew to start some process
which would maintain the attitude of the craft to be parallel to the
tangent of the flight path.  Does that not happen automatically for an
orbiting craft?

Barbara Morgan: longest wait ever??28 May 2004 05:13 GMT67
It just occurred to me that with the current flight stand-down
Barbara Morgan must surely have waited some 20 years for her flight -
assuming it ever happens.  One has to admire her determination!
Who else would come close to this extraordinary delay?  I can
Whats the best way to display a shuttle at KSC?27 May 2004 05:39 GMT13

becoming a home for birds.
I was thinking upright on one of the pads, with the entire pad enclosed in

Taking out the garbage26 May 2004 16:23 GMT27
Here and there I've read books on spaceflight that make mention of the
garbage that accumulates in a spacecraft, and what to do with it.  If the
flight is short enough, all the garbage is just stored on board and brought
back to the ground for disposal.  But during the Soviet Salyut ...

Anyone else look at _this_ image:

You can really tell how old this is because all the men are still wearing hats.
If we had spent more $ on the original shuttle design26 May 2004 11:41 GMT7
Do you believe it would still be scheduled for retirement today?
Lets imagine a alternate design with launch boost escape, and easier cheaper
servicing. Say motors rather than APUs, being rid of those nasty fuels. Liquid
boosters rather than solids.
