BREAKING NEWS:  A Solar Twin in Serpens?07 Aug 2005 04:31 GMT3
A dim yellow star in the constellation Serpens may be nearly identical to
the Sun, say astronomers in South Carolina and Hawaii. The star could
therefore host a life-bearing planet like Earth.

i was camping in yellowstone NP three weeks ago.  for the first time in
quite a while, i was able to observe sunrise and starry night.  one
thing i noticed is that by comparing the location of Polaris at night
and that of the sunrise in the morning, i noticed they're in the same

Shuttle fleet grounded again?07 Aug 2005 01:23 GMT19
Sky News are reporting that NASA have decided to ground the Shuttle fleet
again once the current mission is complete. Looks like they are worried over
the external tank foam yet again.
Does make you wonder why the insulation wasn't put on the inside of the

computing the number of alien planet lifeforms06 Aug 2005 09:39 GMT8
I have made considerable progress this month of July 2005 considering
where I was back in the late 1990s on this topic. I have an equation
for Life in the Cosmos. It goes like this:
10^148 Coulombic Interactions in an Atom Totality of 231Pu = 10^78
Astronomers who have lived in Cambridge or have  been to Cambridge university help req please06 Aug 2005 01:58 GMT20
any of you clever souls help me along please
I am writing an article for the local paper and was wondering how many
eminent astronomers have lived in Cambridge or been to Cambridge Uni.
The few I have so far are:
Discovery  Count down has Begun06 Aug 2005 01:04 GMT20
July is a very bad month. Lift off at 3.51pm the worse time of day. East
coast gets rain late in the day with lightning. Cool ocean breeze can
create fog. 11 am much better atmospheric conditions.  Why is NASA
acting so idiotic? Why is NASA putting a mother of two at the controls?
U.S. Wants To End the Link Between Time and Sun05 Aug 2005 23:51 GMT21
The "leap seconds" added every few years to compensate for the Earth's
slowing rotation can be a big hassle for computers. But a secret U.S.
proposal to end the system has set off a wave of passionate opposition
from astronomers.
Images of binary systems05 Aug 2005 16:42 GMT14
Dear Friends,
I was wondering if anyone here has done any imaging of binary star
systems and, if possible, multi-coloured systems?
I did some imaging last night and a couple of preliminary results (more
