Whatever happened to scepticism in the US?04 Feb 2005 22:52 GMT36
Some of the statements in the "who gives most threads" are so
outrageously wrong that I wonder what can make a majority in a
developed nation believe such stupid notions.
Be it that France is a nothing country, the US is the prime fighter
Relativistic CMB04 Feb 2005 20:56 GMT48
If we are in a hypothetical space ship, at 99.9999 % (or so) of light speed
(as observed from Earth), then Special Relativity tells us that time will
run very slow for us w.r.t. Earth time.
Of course, we don't notice that, but we WILL see that the stars in front of

Ray Kurzweil on Art Bell Tonight SAT! A must hear!04 Feb 2005 15:52 GMT4
Okay, it's 1:30 AM EST so that gives a half hour notice and yes it's
Art Bell.  But once in a blue moon Art Bell has guest worthy of
listening to.  Wild stuff without the cartoony kooks, aliens or other
nonsense.
We need new planets in our solar system !!!04 Feb 2005 14:02 GMT3
It has to be said : All the planets in our solar system except Earth
are rubbish.Useless balls of gases, rubble and worthless liquids.
So I recommend to destroy the useless planets and create a few new
ones in the next years.

accretion/event horizon03 Feb 2005 20:47 GMT14
just reading about the chandra observations of the event horizons of
xray novae. whilst reading it a question came to mind; have all the
previous 'observations' of black holes been based only upon the
observing of relative motions created by the enormous densities that
Magnitude from photon counts03 Feb 2005 19:55 GMT34
Suppose you have a photon counter or CCD which records the amount of
light from an extended source, e.g. the large magellanic cloud. Is it
poss. to equate photon counts to an integrated brightness (i.e.
magnitudes), given that the photon count will vary according to how

What is the hazy ring around the moon?03 Feb 2005 16:35 GMT3
Tonight we looked up at the moon and noticed a hazy ring around it,
many moons in diameter. I guess it has something to do with our
atmosphere. I just want to know what that ring is called, assuming it
has a name.
