Law of Orbits30 Nov 2006 23:12 GMT22
If this question could be answered, it might straighten out some confusion
for me.
Let's say the sun vanishes instantly.  We wouldn't go dark until 8 minutes
later. However, what happens to the earth's orbit? Would it also take 8
Does this guy know what he's talking about??30 Nov 2006 15:53 GMT8
Amazon.com just delivered to me a copy of "The Urban Astronomer's Guide" by
one Rod Mollise.
At first look, it appears to be a useful piece of work.
Does this guy really know what he's talking about?  :-)
Collimation30 Nov 2006 08:57 GMT3

Skywatcher 130P (focal length 650).
I've had the scope for about six months now and had a go at collimating

New threat to Earth-based astronomy28 Nov 2006 22:20 GMT50
If the sun warms the Earth too dangerously, the time may come to
draw the shade. The "shade" would be a layer of pollution
deliberately spewed into the atmosphere to help cool the
planet. This over-the-top idea comes from prominent scientists,
An Unusual "Cloud" on Tuesday Evening, November 2128 Nov 2006 21:04 GMT11
While observing from a dark site in central Pennsylvania on Tuesday
night, my observing buddy and I noticed what we first took to be an

Photographic Size of a Star28 Nov 2006 20:35 GMT11
quoting from wikipedia (Apparent Magnitude article)
"a first magnitude star is about 2.512 times as bright
as a second magnitude star".
Does this effectively means that in a photo, the radius

Here's some practical advice.  During daylight hours enlist a friend to
hold a confectioners powdered sugar coated doughnut against a cooperating

neighbor should live between 300 and 400 feet from your scope ...
Does a naked-eye gain of +1.5 magnitudes imply an equal telescopic gain?28 Nov 2006 04:37 GMT1
If I go somewhere darker than my light-polluted home and take my
telescope, and I can see 1.5 magnitudes fainter there with the naked
eye than at home, should I expect an equal improvement with the
telescope? Does it work that way?
