Merry Christmas (Happy Hannukah, etc.) to everyone (yes, everyone!) on
sci.space.*
Let us all hope that 2004 is a better year for space exploration than was
2003.
May God bless you and your families...

This being December 24, 2003, 35 years to the day Apollo 8 orbited the
Moon -- the first men ever to see Earthrise -- it is only appropriate that
the second most famous Lunar Address be part of the Internet tonight. (Only
the first words from the Moon: "Houston: the Eagle has landed!" And
Armstrong's "That's one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind!"
are slightly greater, and that only due to chronology.
Thanks to Roger Balettie for giving us the link to the Apollo Archives:
www.apolloarchive.org
and follow the prompts to the Christmas Message from Apollo 8.
Would God we had, as a Nation and as a People, followed up on the success of
the Apollo Missions -- and that the Soviet had been able to launch their N1
successfully. We would have been listening to the Apollo 8 transmissions --
in the
Lunar Archives, actually in the Lunar Settlements.
"And from the crew of Apollo 8, a Merry Christmas to all of you on the Good
Earth." -- COL Frank Borman, USAF (Ret.), Commander, Apollo 8.

That was the most meaningful Christmas eve I can remember from my youth.
I drifted off to sleep thinking about the Apollo-8 crew orbiting the
moon. It was a magical time.
