A Google search didn't seem to provide the answer for this question, so
I'll ask it here.

I was looking through a set of photos that I took on a 1991 trip to
Florida, and in the photos taken near the visitors center at the Cape
space complex, there is a photo of a shuttle orbiter on display, and it
has "Ambassador" stenciled on the side under the cockpit windows.

Was there a mockup of the orbiter by this name?

Its a mock up walk thru display, not bad and I understand they added some
flight flown components. I remember touching its tires which had been to space.

Nice display:)

"Ambassador" is a mockup, constructed by a commercial firm.  For a long
time, its solids were flown hardware, but they were actually changed out
for parts that were needed.  The replacements may also be former flown
hardware that was discarded, post "Challenger".

You sure about that?  You may be thinking of the fustrums that came from
another mock-up I believe. (The one in Alabama if my memory serves.)

In december 1990, the first Orbiter mock up is display at KSC Visitor. It s
called "Ambassador" and was builted by Guard Lee and Co, and shipped by
truck. This mock up was sheduled remaind at KSC one year.

1992, its was sheduled Ambassador leave the KSC on junary 19 and shipped in
Europ. The KSC Visitor awarded other mock up for the center on permanent
display. But in february, Ambassador remains another year in display at
center.
Junary 1993, Ambassador was dismanteled and shipped in Coréa. The Apopka
Florida compagny Guard Lee was built another mock up in 1994. The name
"Explorer" was choised by Florida scool.

Any view of Amabssador at KSC taken by a french friend.

Their first photo looks almost exactly like my photo, from nearly the
same vantage point, with the Mercury-Redstone and Mercury-Atlas in the
background.

If Ambassador wasn't renamed to Explorer, then where exactly is
Ambassador right now, and why the need to build another mockup from
scratch?

I think that they are indeed confusing the Pathfinder mockup in Alabama
with the formerly named mockup "Ambassador", now "Explorer". I remember
reading the old magazine "Odyssey" about the mockup's construction. I was
a bit suprised to read later on in the second addition to Jenkin's Space
Shuttle, that it was renamed.
