In the coverage of the launch I can see some spectators standing on a grass verge with a big countdown clock. Which vantage point is
that? Is it the VIP viewing area about 3 miles away or the causeway viewing area 6 miles away?
I'd like to know because I'm planning to buy causeway tickets for the December launch :-) Anyone know when they go on sale? I'm
guessing after Discovery has returned home?

Neither. It is the Press Site between the Launch Control Center and
the barge turning basin. You need press credentials to be there for a
launch.

Yes!!! Just confirmed my causeway tickets for the next launch. When I arrive in florida from the UK I'll be staying in Miami (South
Beach) for a week.
I've never visited America before, so can anyone tell me the best/cheapest way to travel from South Beach to KSC?

Thanks in advance.

Rent a car and drive up Interstate 95.

I think I'll probably take the Amtrak from Miami to Orlando and then catch a taxi to KSC. Driving on the other side of the road in a
totally different road system is pretty scary to me :-)
I actually didn't realise how far Miami was from KSC...looks like over a 100 miles.

It's around 45 miles from Orlando (WDW) to KSC...

You're right. Looks like I'll have to do some more research :-(

The drive from Orlando to KSC must be the easiest drive anywhere in the
world!!!
You take the Beeline from Orlando and it's a pretty much straight road
all the way to KSC.
I believe there are bus tours out to there too...

The renamed the Bee Line as the Beachline a few years ago. Lots of
tolls, of course.

Yeah, stupid renaming.

Too bad Disney never went through with one of their pie in the sky plans
(back when we were talking weekly shuttle flights, etc.) and build a
monorail line out to KSC.  (I've only seen one reference to this years ago
so if anyone else can find a reference, let me know.)

Over 200. About 3 1/2 hours from Miami to KSC.
About 1 hour from the Amtrak Station in Orlando to KSC.

It won't be cheap but the quickest way for me to go to KSC and back again to Miami in a single day will be to take a short 1 hour
flight to Orlando then catch a bus tour from there to KSC. The KSC website does mention a regular bus service between Orlando & KSC.

Thank you all for your help.

You will spend more time in both airports than driving from Miami

and then do the same thing the next day when the launch is scrubbed,

well you get the idea

Independent travel and accommodation within easy driving distance
makes more sense.  Driving is easy in the US as there is no European
concept of lane discipline and everyone runs red lights :)

I haven't had a chance to do much driving in Europe (busses in
Scotland, taxi in the dark in London, and busses in Amsterdam).
However, the reputation of Rome is that sidewalks are passing lanes,
and the reputation of Paris is that taxis have right-of-way over
anyone without a louder horn.

I'd not drive any car I had a sentimental attachment to on the streets
of Paris or Rome nor for that matter in Milan, Turin, or Marseilles.
Most Americans can't drive, and the ones that can are absolutely lousy
drivers, but they are still better than French or Italian big city
drivers :)

That's going to be one huge taxi bill!  Better double check how far it is
from Orlando to KSC.  Don't forget that the best (only?) route there
includes toll rodes, so I'm sure the taxi driver will pass that cost on to
you.

The US is a big place.  Mapquest is a good web site to double check driving
distances.

I just did this on Tuesday for the STS-120 launch.  It's 49 miles from the
Orlando airport to Cocoa Beach (next to the cape).  The toll is $1.25 each way.

Not the only. From the airport, you can go up Semoran to Colonial
(SR-50) and east to Titusville. More traffic, but the toll booths on
528 around the airport can be chaos, too.

I still think driving from Miami is the way to go. Avoid the airport
logjam and be on your own timetable.

Orlando or Miami, it doesn't matter, still would be affected by
logjams.  Still have to get on 50 or 528.  You are screwed either way

Why not just stay at one of the many motels in Cocoa Beach? (sp?)

You might also want to check into driving from Jacksonville - the
airport is going to be a hell of a lot less crowded, and once you are
out of the immediate Jacksonville area, traffic on I95 drops
significantly.  (And drops even further once you get south of St.
Augustine.)  You'll end up with half the highway miles and _much_ less
hassle and traffic.

If you can spare the time, and endure the traffic of the northern
portion, one can also take 17 down a considerable ways.  17 is a
backwater highway, but a very pleasant drive.  (And there's a helluva
crab shack on it a little ways down from Jax.)
