Anybody have any "war stories" on US paperwork vs. Russian paperwork to
build a spaceship. I left NASA about a year ago and am glad I did. The
conceptual design phase of Orion/Ares was winding down and all I could see
for the next several years was review after review and each review
generating mountains of paper -- most of it simply repeating what was said
in an earlier document. Not exactly exciting work of an engineer that likes
design work.
When I worked with the Russian's in 1993 to buy the Soyuz, they had
virtually no paperwork on the spacecraft. I few hand written design sheets
were sent to the machine shop and the space craft was built. No wonder the
Russians can do the same work for a fraction of the cost.
Somebody in station has got to have some good stories on this subject.

This reminds me of the time I worked for Tektronix in Beaverton Or.
Possibly more paperwork than even the above NASA. "review after review
and each review generating mountains of paper -- most of it simply
repeating what was said in an earlier document." And lots of stupidly
set up computer databases, that made selecting appropriate components
unnecessarily difficult. Design review: me: Here's the design for the
blah-blah function circuit, it does blah blah. What about the XTW
document, and the PYV report, the boss would ask? Well, I would have
had time to do any actual engineering design if I did that BS." Turns
out that paperwork was sacred to them... And that was a commercial
operation that somehow managed to build product anyway.

remember no nasa project can be built till the weight of the paperwork
is at least 5 times the weight of the vehicle being designed:)

So it means that 5 forms must be filled, signed and stamped before one
can build a paper airplane on a friday afternoon ?

no actually SIX one to authorize the go ahead for the other paperwork:)

And to get that authorization, you'll have to submit plans and set up
design reviews and so on, like a proposal for bid...

How much paperwork will then be required to build a prototype paper
airplane before building the real one ?
