GO FEVER IS AGAIN RUNNING THE SHOW:( from nasawatch

Reader note: "Hell of a PRCB today. After a nearly 6 hour debate, the
decision was made to fly the ice frost ramps as is. Griffin and Gerst
were even there for this topic. When the final poll was made it was a
nearly perfect 50/50 split on fly as is or stand-down and redesign. The
FCOD rep (Bowersox) said fly as is, by the way. Most of the offices
with the word "Engineering" in their title voted to stand down. It was
good to see the program management have the balls to make a tough
decision. Apparently, John Muratore contacted Griffin either before the
meeting or during the lunch break or perhaps via Blackberry to express
his opinion though, because Griffin mentioned talking to John earlier
in the day. John wanted to stand-down. Mike said fly as is. A truly
fascinating meeting that gave me hope for the SSP management. Hope that
was lost soon after Parsons was installed and I watched him in action."

In all honesty, I really believe those guys have made the Shuttle as good
as they can and as good as its going to get, ever.  So, its either go or
no-go and they have to decide if we're going default to the foreign powers
for many years, or take our chances.

Bob, you and I have bought many, many consumer products that we hoped would
be perfect in form and function, but later disappointed with their
deficiencies.  The Shuttle is no different.  It was flawed from the day it
was laid down on the drawing board, but we're stuck with it, just like
we're stuck with DVD machines that don't read all the home-made discs we
churn out, or the camera that just can't take really sharp pictures, and on
and on.  I think they ought to launch the Shuttle so long as the crews
agree to taking the risk.  As you have said, one more accident and its all
over anyways, but maybe they'll get lucky and finish the series of
launches.  I wish NASA the best of luck.
