The End of This Story

Reunite Gondwanaland (Mary Shafer) - 22 Jun 2005 22:32 GMT
I've mentioned my collies, Neil and Buzz, often enough here that some
of you are familiar with them.

It's with a heavy heart that I write to tell my friends here about the
end of Buzz's story.  This morning he went to the vet to end his
battle with cancer and set out on a new exploration.  As he always
did, he's forging ahead into new territory.  His brother Neil is
staying behind with Ken and me this time, even though they've always
gone everywhere together before.

It's now that I hope most fervently that there is an afterlife and
that we're reunited with those we love there.

My condolences.

It hurts to lose a pet.  This weekend I
somberly helped bury a guinea pig named
"Cookie" whose loss instigated sobbing and
waves of tears down my youngest son's
face (she squeeked when he entered the room,
but for no one else).  And yes, O.K., I
shed tears too - my first time for a rodent.

My condolences, Mary. I love dogs and sadly have lost some over the
years, also. Dogs are so smart, sometimes it seems like they read your
mind and know what you are going to do, before you do it. A dog makes
its owner the center of its world. I like the bumper sticker that
says, "Help me to be the person my dog thinks I am." It's sad such
intelligent creatures live such short lives.

You have most heartfelt sympathies, Mary.  As I've seen written
elsewhere, a dog will die for you but he will never lie to you.  The
furry members of our families are among the most precious things in the
world and I understand your feelings completely.

Except when asked in a strident voice "Did you do this?" :-)

I've always liked the Rainbow Bridge poem:

My condolences to Ken and Mary.

I'm very sorry to hear that.
There's going to be a big hole in the house, where Buzz should be.
There's something about a well-loved and well-kept dog that inspires,
well, I don't know - an overwhelming sense of responsibility on the
Master's part.  No matter what, you always want to make it right, or
at least make it better.
It helps us be the best that we can be.

You have my deepest sympathies; I've known many really nice dogs that
have passed on over the years, and I really miss them all.
I'm sure Neil will miss him also.
I'm never been sure if people go to an afterlife, but  I really can't
picture a world where good dogs don't.
That just wouldn't be fair.

Mary,
I hope Buzz gets a good long time to explore before you, Ken and
Neil join him. The first dog in my life was a collie we named Tip. He
was a faithful friend to me from the age of three until I was 20. He never
asked for anything, but gave so much. My Scottie Chloe is sleeping
on my bed now (like I should be). I won't yell at her tonight for taking
up 80% of a queen-sized bed :) Not that I ever do...

There's nothing I can say that will really comfort you at all, I know- but
I just wanted to know that you are all in my thoughts.

Mary & Ken:

Condolences from all of us here in Jackson WI.

We have 2 cats and 1 dog as you know and they are our family here.

If there's anything we can do or you need just yell.

Godspeed Buzz!

George

P.S. I'm guessing they were named after Neil Armstrong and Buzz
Aldrin?

My condolences, Mary.  Poor Neil must be heartbroken.  At least he lived
a happy life in a good home.  We had a collie when I was a kid.  We got
him when I was 6.  The week before I left for college 12 years later he
was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.  Witnesses said it was a
police car of all things.

Take care of Neil for as long as he can be happy and make you happy.  I
hope Buzz and my old dog are bothering a cat or two right now.  Or
chasing kids across a ball field somewhere.
