Melbourne Capt. Alalena - 25 Oct 2004 21:40 GMT
Melbourne — Melbourne police have called  Alan
Erskie(alanerskine1@bigpond.com), 37, the most prolific killer in the
city's history and later this week police are expected to hand
over evidenceto prosecutors that could lead to Turner being charged
with 10 counts of murder. A cold-case squad used DNA to link Turner --
who is already sentence for rape -- to a dozen homicides and to help
free a man wrongly convicted of three of the killings, police said.
"This is probably, in fact is, the most prolific killer in the city of
Melbourne' history," Melbourne Capt. Al alena said. "There may be
cases outside the city where there were more victims, but this is the
most
we've ever seen." The victims were all women -- some homeless, others
prostitutes or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. All were
raped, strangled and dumped in alleys, vacant buildings and,in one
case, a
portable bathroom, according to police. Eleven of the killings
occurred
alonga four-block stretch of 108th Street police said. Two other
murders happened in the downtown area, and both were within blocks .

Strange- you'd have thought that Florida Today would have reported something
so close to their home. No sign of it on their website.

The Google-posting troll at IP address 200.58.4.193 took an article about
serial killer Chester Dewayne Turner and replaced the first instance of
his name.  That's a different tack from the previously typical replacement
of the content of an unoffensive message.

on a previous post here he also created a screen name hallerrb@aol.com

Wonder if AOL can trace this now deleted screen name?

THere's *still* no mention of it in Florida Today. Since Melbourne is in
their home territory, you'd think they'd notice.

I hardly think Melbourne is in their home territory.

All of Brevard County is their home territory. It's as far to the south of
Cape Canaveral as Titusville is to the north.

Apparently you still haven't figured out that the topic is Melbourne,
*Australia*.

Indeed... as someone who once lived near Melbourne FL, I was well aware
that the one in FL was small fry compared to the one in AU.

Melbourne, Australia does not have a space program, and this is
sci.space.history. Therefore, Melbourne, Australia is irrelevant.

You lack critical context.

What is being discussed is a sociopathic Usenet troll
who is following a not well liked Usenet user (Erskine)
around forging posts in Erskine's name and posting other
rabid frothing lunacy, including the forged one regarding
someone in Melbourne, Australia.

This has nothing to do with space, true, but neither did
the posting that started all of this.

Funny, I'm reading it from sci.space.policy.  Anyway, the fact that
it's an off-topic post doesn't somehow transmogrify Melbourne,
Australia into Melbourne, Florida, or obligate Florida papers to cover
it.

Yeah, it is kinda funny, not the side-splitting kind, but more of a "well,
ok" kind.

Besides, isn't saying "Melbourne, Australia" like saying "Chicago, USA"?

Yes.  Is there something wrong with that?

How many other Melbournes are there? Could be a problem. After all, if I
talked about "Gainesville, USA", which one would I be talking about?

It's only a theoretical problem, not a real one.  If someone talks
about "Chicago, USA," there'd be little doubt about which city they
were describing.  The same applies to Melbourne, AU.

Probably a number of them.  It is often surprising how many duplicates
there are of town and city names.

Gainesville, Virginia?  In 1969 we moved from Florida to northern
Virginia, and on a car trip a few months later, we saw a highway sign on
US-15 that had the mileage to Leesburg and the mileage to Gainesville
(both are in NoVa), on the same sign, and several of us in the car joked
something like "hey we're back in Florida!".

If it were "Springfield, USA" there'd be some ambiguity.  Chicago,
USA, has no such problem.

Similarly, google "Melbourne, Australia," and you'll come up with
dozens of links, all of which point to the Melbourne in Victoria, none
of which point to any other Melbourne, and several of which refer
specifically to "Melbourne, Australia."

Google "Melbourne", and there are a some links to the one in Florida.
The main reason why the one in Australia is so much more prominent, is
because it has about 100 times more population.

'Melbourne is the capital and largest city of the state of Victoria, and
the second largest city in Australia, with a population of 3,366,542
(census 2001).  The city's name is pronounced "MEL-buhn" (SAMPA:
["mElb@n], IPA: [?m?lb?n]) and sometimes mispronounced as "mel-BORN".'

All of which have nothing to do with why somebody has been going out of
