Does anyone here know where I can find pictures of space-shuttle re-entries,
preferrably giving a good rendering of the the red or yellow-hot bottom as
it enters the atmosphere  (will have to be artwork, I suppose - difficult to
get external photographs of this)

Thanks

There's a photo from STS-1 (or so, but I think it's STS-1) showing the
IR image of the belly of the Orbiter.  Actually, it shows the IR image
of one side of the belly, with the other side being a standard visible
spectrum photo.  The IR imaging was performed by the USAF using a
specially instrumented airplane flying under the Orbiter's flight
path.  I don't know the photo number, but might be able to find it
out.

Or you can look in the references from Iliff and Shafer's papers on
hypersonic aerothermodynamics and find temperature maps from the
instrumentation system.
