Hanks to blast off for moon - again

By Jeffrey Hodgson

TORONTO (Reuters) - "Apollo 13" star Tom Hanks is set to return to the
Moon, teaming up with big-screen movie firm Imax to produce a 3D
documentary about NASA's historic lunar voyages.

Imax said on Wednesday the two-time Oscar winner would co-produce and
likely narrate "Magnificent Desolation", which will use never before
seen photographs and previously unreleased NASA footage.

Hanks and Imax first announced plans for the project in December 2002,
but said the 45-minute movie is now on track for a 2005 release.

The idea for the film was reportedly conceived by the star of "Forrest
Gump" and "Philadelphia" after he saw a version of "Apollo 13" that had
been reformatted for Imax theatres, where the screens can soar up to
eight storeys high.

"Exploring the Moon was humankind's most incredible roadtrip. Our film
will bring along anyone who wants to take that giant leap for
themselves," Hanks said in a statement.

"Magnificent Desolation" will be based on "The Lunar Surface Journals",
an archival database that chronicles the Moon walks as recounted by the
astronauts.

Imax said the film would include computer-generated renditions of the
Moon's surface. It will be directed by Emmy-nominated Mark Cowen.

Am I missing something?  Why the frown?

Often "Based on" = "unrecognisably mangled version of".

...Except in this case, we're dealing with Tom Hanks, who's had a
pretty f.cking good track record so far. The only Apollo-related stuff
I ever had issue with was the E2M A13 episode(*) and the Whining Wives
episode, which mangled Pat White quite a bit more than history would
state was truth.

(*) And that's only because we didn't get to see Brett Hutchings get
caught using the glory holes in an adult theater like a lot of those
"pretty boy" newsfaces were caught in the act at in the 80's.

Given his work on From The Earth to the Moon, I'm not too worried.

How does one get a 3-D, 15-perf image from a 2-D Hasselblad image?

On second thought, don't tell me, I don't want to know.
