I seem to be having problems with starting BOINC when I startup my
computer (not that I turn it off very often) since I installed Norton 6.
I have to stop the automatic start and do a manual one...

Anyone got a cure for this?

Get rid of Norton!

Better yet, get rid of Windows so that you don't need anything like
Norton in the first place! (There are very good alternatives, see the
sig ;-) )

The Boinc startup problems are well known. Best is to use the latest
version of the Boinc manager where there's been quite a few fixes for
the Windows nightmares. Secondly, if you're still having problems, try
one of the startup utilities that delays the start of whatever programs
you specify.

Full kudos to the Boinc devs for working around most of the Windows
'gotchas'!

Good luck,
Martin

You choose your software first, then your OS.   Unfortunately, that means
that many suckers have no choice but to use Windows.

I guess no professional software is needed there, either.  The Macintosh
is virus-free like Linux, but unlike Linux, the Mac can run great software
such as Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Guide, Indesign, GoLive, Flash
Author, Aperture, Final Cut Pro, PageMaker, ImageReady, Live Motion,
Starry Night and many, many, many others.

I'll agree re the Mac and OS X. I'll disagree on your Linux slur.

There is equally great (professional quality) Open Source software on
Linux. There is proprietary applications available also if you are
locked into that stuff. And you can even run the 'major' Windows apps on
Linux using the WINE environment.

Lots of choice and it works well.

The real killer is "proprietary lock-in" and the removal of choice users
(expensively) suffer from that. One particular now large company has
been dangerously successful with that scam.

Martin

Yes, I second the getting rid of Norton.  It is a resource hog
worse than most things I have seen.

I use AVG and Zone Alarm (both free) and have zero troubles with
BOINC.

As for the startup delay programs, do a google search with keywords
startup delay freeware and don't use quotes and you will find some
choices.
