OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Erebus Bound - sol 580-585, Sept 19, 2005:

Opportunity has resumed normal operations this week. The rover is
healthy and making progress towards "Erebus Crater." The rover team has
been commanding Opportunity to drive every chance it gets. The last two
sols this week have been remote sensing only, due to a lack of critical
data.

Sol-by sol summaries:

Sols 580 and 581 (Sept. 10 and 11, 2005): The weekend included a
26.3-meter (86-foot) drive with observations before and after the
drive.

Sol 582: A 30-meter (98-foot) drive this sol brought the rover to the
"Erebus Highway?" an outcrop-rich area that extends south toward the
crater.

Sol 583: The previous sol's drive appears to have completed
successfully, however no data was received due to an issue at the Deep
Space Network station where the data is received from space and
transmitted to JPL.

Sol 584: Remote sensing was performed, which included as systematic
foreground survey using the panoramic camera and miniature thermal
emission spectrometer. The plan included commands for the rover to
re-transmit the critical post-drive data to Earth, but these were not
received due to a sequencing error.

Sol 585 (Sept. 15, 2005): This sol's plan included commands for remote
sensing and for re-transmission of the post-drive imaging.

Total odometry as of sol 584 (Sept. 14, 2005): 5,874.32 meters or 3.65
miles.

In any case, those painful little steps in discovery mean nothing, since the
pioneering spirit does not exist anymore.

Pioneers i.e.  those who open the way are completely ridiculed by those who
follow with greater means & material. As an example the gallant French
prospector who discovered the Great Sandy Desert immense richness in
Australia, by doing the whole prospecting on foot is ridicule by the very
people who profit by his discoveries now. It's so easy to consider the Great
Sandy Desert from the altitude of helicopter or a jet, and further the mines
are just down there... so evident to find with their runways, plants &
facilities !

Likewise the dangerous & lengthy exploration of the planet Mars now,  will
seem ridiculously evident for those coming later with technology making Mars
a mere 3 hours flight time from planet Earth ( a system of such evidence
that implementing it will be made within the next 5 years) & especially with
the superior intelligence imparted by the True Geology giving them insight
that Mars is exactly as the Earth will be one day. Or in other words what is
on Mars is what is on Earth with a few millions years of drift & weathering
to account for. The damned stupidity of the Universalities Hierarchy, and of
their brainwashed pupils,  is the main hurdle toward a clear enlightening of
both Mankind and Earth History.

With kindest regards

Of course and without asking, you are obviously from the Land of Bastards,

Any chance you could calculate the g forces that a passenger would be
exposed to if a 3 hour trip to mars were possible?

Accelerate for half the time, cover half the distance.
Total today is 85 million km

d = 1/2 a t^2

a = 2 * d / t ^ 2

a = 85000000000/2 * 2/ (.5 * 3 hours * 60 hours/min * 60 min/sec)^2

a = 2914.9 m/s

That's not so bad.  300 Gs.

One possible solution (in theory) would be to have the G force work on
ALL parts of the body, say each molecule.
This could perhaps be done by ultra strong magnetic fields, they have
levitated a frog in such a field.
Superconducting magnets....
It is worth an accelleration test with those froggies I think.

Oh I can conceive ok. I'm having problems with the implementation. Mostly I
just get increased mass around the waistline.
Eljin - 22 Sep 2005 06:54 GMT
Could we please stop thinking in terms of brute force rocketry? Most
people stop playing with those as kids.

If you control the gravity well you are riding on, then you are no
longer affected by external G forces. The tree hour time limit he
mentioned has to do with the transit times in atmosphere and the initial
buildup and power down of the transit system itself. At our current
level of technology it takes time to build up the required energy to
produce a stable field.

I am of course making the assumption that a gravitic drive system is
what he is remarking upon. There is always the idea of an inertial
compensation system being used against a normal reaction drive.

It is humorous to note that, as our technology progresses, it is
becoming more difficult to write good science fiction. Space operas are
becoming the norm and what was thought to be far ahead of its time ten
years ago is now just around the corner.

Sorry, but I could not pass up the opportunity to inject my two cents
worth.  :-)

Dam. Why didn't I think of that :-)
Eljin - 24 Sep 2005 00:03 GMT
Yeah , but here's the rub...
Are we able to do that yet? Outside of a good Science Fiction story that
is...
Daydream ..... Daydream....
Scotty where's that damn power I asked you for?

If it was up your @#$ you'd know it Capn'...

WHOOPS! wrong daydream!

-> Any chance you could calculate the g forces that a passenger would be
-> exposed to if a 3 hour trip to mars were possible?

That should be easy. At its closest, Mars is about 70 million
kilometres from Earth. Let's say 75 million, to make the numbers easy.
So the *average* speed of the spacecraft would have to be 25 million
km/h. It would have to accelerate from zero to 50 million km/h in the
first hour-and-a-half, then decelerate back down to zero in the second
hour-and-a-half. (The speeds of the planets are very small, by
comparison, so they can be neglected.) So in 5.4e3 seconds (1.5 hours)
the craft has to accelerate by 5e10/3.6e3 metres per second. So the
acceleration is 5e10/(3.6e3 x 5.4e3) m/s^2, which is around 2.6e3 m/s^2
or about 260 g.

260 g is a lot, but maybe not totally impossible. If the passenger's
lungs were filled with some sort of liquid with roughly the same
density as water, and if he were to be floating in a tank of some
similar liquid, the stresses on his body tissues could be tolerable.
