What kind of computer is it and what is the email software, and what is
the browser software.  Do you have a service provider?

for windows XP    So far its giving me a nervous breakdown.  If this is
user friendly it must have been programmed by my worse enemy  Oops I did

You're getting email?  Then you must be connected.  I have a Compaq
Presario too, but an older model, and not a notebook.

If you are using AOL, they no longer supply access to Usenet, so you
may have to post through Google.

Double A read for content...
Herb used Web TV...
Web TV used a browser to read both mail and news.

Look at the address Beeert gave:
AOL is the provider, which doesn't provide any news service...

Bert,
Why not go to Google Groups,
sign up fo membership, if you are not already,
then post on Google Groups, which is what I
and many others do?

Look for "Groups" under the "More"
link ...

Twitty  I think I'm with Google?   I think part of my problem is having
used my MSN webtv for 8 years is screwing up my way of doing stuff. Not
use to doing anything more than pressing a key to get me there. No
pointer, and every thing is just about on my Home page,or I just press
into "favorites"   and I'm in Alt. Astronomy.    Will keep both.
go figure  It was a good buy(I think)  Bert

Bert,
I sent you an email to your AOL.
Your address is NOT @net, by the way.

Go to Google, sign up, and then search under
the Groups search mode for alt.astronomy.

You'll be fine.

Are you signed on the Web via AOL now?
G=EMC^2 Glazier - 18 Nov 2006 22:33 GMT
Twitty Have not had time to check "laptop email" will do so latter. Yes
I still  have my web out of MSN and using it now.  Your email came to me
dark blue on black, and I could not read it (On my web address). Bert

If you need help, you can call AA or me,
or I you, via Cell phone.

AA has an IBM-type comp, and I a Mac,
so less directly helpful for you.

But I can get you to usenet, for sure, via
Google.

Its user unfriendly. I have to pull the plug out of the wall to shut it
off. It makes my Webtv look lije something out of the future. Who needs
a mouse?. Who needs an arrow flying around on the screen?  Have my web
for 8 years, and it is virus free. Now I have to pay $60 a year to keep
laptop virus free. This begs the question  "IS this progress?   Go figure

Bert,
I bet it's easier to use than you think.

Sounds like you need a nice patient
tutor to show you its tricks ...

... then you might fall in love with it.
Bill Sheppard - 23 Nov 2006 23:43 GMT
Bert,
Twitterer is right. All you need is a tutor-er. Seriously. I
have a snazzy 'real' computer running Windows XP on DSL and love it.
It's great for lots and lots of stuff where connection speed is
paramount, such as playing videos. But i'll tell you this- nothing beats
the old Webbie rig for posting to NGs. The faihful, reliable old girl is
still good for what she's good for.. while the hot 'New' phillie is
tedious, tempermental and tiring when it comes to NGs. If all you want
to do is NGs, stick with the Webbie rig. But bein's you got a new
computer, get a tutor. It'll open up a whole world of wonderful new
stuff for you.
Another reason for using the old rig for NGs is as a spam
trap. That way, the new rig doesn't get contaminated with spam. For
example,

Header address is a spam trap. E-mail: oldcoot7074 at sbcglobal.net

Twitty I know its me. I have a mental block using this laptop. Its like
my mental block on learning how to spell and construct a sentence. I'm
thinking of having my grandsons come to Florida to show me how to use
it. They were taught in school when they were 8  Bert

Bert, those of us who learned to use a PC using the DOS operating
system said these same thing when WINOWS came out.  But now I wouldn't
be without it.

Find on your Start-Up Menu the online tutorial, which will be something
like "Wecome to WINDOWS".  It may have come up automatically the first
time you powered up.  That will step you through  the basic things you
need to learn to run your machine.  It's a computer, Bert.  It's not
for dummies.

Or you could save the $60 and hobble along with a crippled machine like
I do!  (But being an ex-systems programmer helps me keep it going.)

This begs the question  "IS this progress?   Go figure
> Bert

Well, you are having to learn, aren't you?  That's progress!

I would rather have a shell account and operate in a unix/linux.

 f.ck windows!

Which means it isn't for beert brain.

My mom was 3 years old when she got her last WindowsXP based machine.
She misses her shell account. alas there are fewer ISP offering real
access.
