I'm still a neophyte/dummy/klutzoid at this kind of stuff. One big
quandary is how in the hell to access NGs on any venue except Google
Groups (and the old 'oxcart' standby, Webtv). The !@#$%^&* G.G.
absolutely sucks. It 'times out' after a few minutes, then throws up a
flag saying, "We're Sorry, but your rig looks to be infected with a
virus or spyware" or some such, and then locks out. Then you have to
shut the damn rig down and wait a while, then boot it back up, and
G.G. is good for another few minutes, then locks out again. Well, if
the rig is indeed "infected", why in the hell does G.G. work at all
before locking out? And why does G.G. seem to have a near-total
monopoly on the NG scene?
Bamboozled, but keepin' on pluggin'. :-)

I researched this not long ago, and i found that all of
the "web-based" readers have either shut down, or
they're not worth a damn. Right now, if you want to
access UseNet using a web-based medium, Google's
about all there is that's even remotely adequate.
I've never liked web-based newsgroup readers. They
have always left much to be desired. I've used Micro-
soft's Outlook Express for quite a while, now. I'm not
really crazy about it, because it seems to get worse
every year, and Microsoft doesn't appear to give a sh.t.
I used Agent, well the free version, "Free Agent" many
years ago, and i liked it. But it still left a little to be
desired. I've come to the conclusion that there are no
"great" free readers out there, one or two "fairly good"
ones, and a whole slew of mediocre reader software.
And i wouldn't be surprised if GG doesn't start phasing
out UseNet soon and then sticking with only its internal
"Google Groups".
I think there's still a big global demand for UseNet, but
if people don't start making some noise, soon there
won't be any decent way to read it!
happy days and...
starry starry nights!
