After decades of searching, scientists have found no trace of     extraterrestrial intelligence. Now, some of them hope to make contact by     broadcasting messages to the stars. Are we prepared for an answer?

There is one type of message any alien culture will surely understand.
Bring telemarketing and spam to a new level, send them a damn advertisement,
you'll never have to worry about them coming here :-)

That is correct, as a good spaced based array of laser cannons should
be rather bright.

Yeah!  SNL, some of the funniest stuff i've ever
seen!  Dan, Jane and cute, sexy Laraine. MMmm!

Another of my Dan and Jane favorites was when
they did the "News".  Do you remember?  Jane
would start out with a brief commentary, and
then Dan would articulate, "Jane, you ignorant
slut!" and give her an argument.  I think it was
called "Point - Counterpoint", OSLT.

Laughed my bells off!

At any rate, there is and has been much humor
attributed to aliens and outer space.  And yet
another "bright side"...

Even if the negativity of the doomsayers turns
out to be true, we will most likely be brought
together as a world to rise up against whatever
tyranny those mean old ET's might bring down
to us.  In the long run, judging by our history
and rebellious natures, this could very well be
a good thing--a very bright side.

Of course, even Sagan believed that, since we
have only been at the hitek stuff for about a
hundred years or so, any ET's who come across
us will probably seem like super-magicians, and
this might make them a liiittle hard to beat.

This will depend on how badly and how quickly
they need what we have that they want.  If they're
not too pressed for time, they'll probably study us
as long as they need to so as to ensure the success
of their invasion.

Yes, I beleive it would be essentially over in the first 2 seconds!

I'll have to go along with us humans lasting all of "the first 2
seconds!"

O sure! the first "battle" (if you could call it that)
might last all of two seconds.  And it's very highly
unlikely that the mean ol' ET's will let all 7 billion
of us live on.  However, they might need some of
us to be their slaves, to do whatever they need us
to do that they don't want to do.  Whatever Earth
has that they want, it will probably be something
that has to be grown or mined.

The relative handful of humans who survive will
eventually rebel.  And rebel, and rebel, until they
either win or die.

A win would mean an Earth united, and bound &
determined never to be slaves to an ET race ever
again!

And their manufactured drones they brought to do the job?

If they have drones, then the drones will be free to
do other tasks that people cannot do.

However, you are probably correct if you think that
all people will be annihilated. Our only chance then
would be if the mean ol' ET's overlook a few tiny
pockets of people who survive.

Has anyone considered, that for all intents and purposes, *we* might be the
"alien" who invades another's world?  *We* might be the one who's
"advanced."  *We* might be the ones who seem like the "magicians."  *We*
might be the ones who bring blight and death to another world.

We will never get out of this Solar System before we destroy ourselves!

Been there, done that, Zyp!

The European invasion of the Americas that
began in the 15th century brought much death
and suffering to the native peoples of North
America.  Spanish and Portuguese explorers
brought their infectious diseases like smallpox,
typhus, measles and the flu with them.  These
decimated the native populations of South
America beginning in the 1530's.

Astronomy's present meticulous concern about
sending sterilized equipment to Mars means to
me that we have learned some good lessons.

What about the satellites we sent past Jupiter and Saturn?  Will those
someday fall to another world and bring problems for them?

I think that this is what some people were hoping
for in the beginning, Zyp.  Carl Sagan expressed
his hope that an advanced race of life would pick
up on these probes, intercept them in space, and
learn about us.  And also the hope is that such an
advanced race would be benevolent and generous
with their knowledge and wisdom.

Space is an unbelievably vast area, even within
our Solar System.  Take the asteroid belt as an
example.  Most people picture this belt as dense
with big rocks.  If you were to fly through it in
your spiffy spaceship, you would have to artfully
dodge all these rocks.  Fact is, if you were to come
upon one of these asteroids in the belt, they are so
far apart that you probably wouldn't be able to see
the next nearest asteroid.

Then when you get beyond the Solar System out
into interstellar space, you can go for long, long
distances, light years even, without encountering
any matter, let alone a Solar System that might
contain life.  So the chances of our probes falling
to another world and causing problems for living
things on that world are pretty much nil.

Most likely, if they don't get picked up by advanced
beings, they'll probably end up centuries, or maybe
thousands of years from now, falling into another
great star and being vaporized.

As I have allready said many times, there are only two types of aliens
more intelligent than your species.

Those who don't care a sh.t about your species, and those who wants to
replace your inferior system with their own superior system.

You forgot a third race, a race with penis envy and very pissed off
about us humans.

Most of us as faith-based snookered and having dumbfounded ourselves
past the point of no return, as such wouldn't know an ET if being
screwed by one.
