Yeah, yeah, right, the broad is gone. Don't beat a dead whorse, BUT
what the f.ck is happening at ***Caltech*** with our tax money?
How many more nuts like that do they breed there?
Here's a current one:
November 21, 2004: William "Billy" Cottrell, 24 year old PhD student
at Caltech, a string theorist, was convicted to a maximum of 40 years
in prison. Civil suits will follow for the $26 millions dollars damage
he caused, which will effectively destroy the life of this green dumbshit.
Cottrell, a member of the ELF, phoned David Suzuki on August 2003
shortly before his SUV arson spree, targeting, destroying or damaging
125 sports utility vehicles at 4 car dealerships, the FBI said. Cottrell,
a green stooley now has also been singing and testified against others
green sh.ts at his trial. He fingered fugitives Tyler Johnson & Michie Oe.

Don't get too worked up about it.  For one, Caltech is a private
institution.  For another, I can say from firsthand experience that it
ain't about the whacked-out PC-nonsense that seems to characterize too
many institutions of "higher" learning.  Quite the contrary.  Of
course, probability dictates a bad apple in every sufficiently-sized
bunch.

Home health care worker. She couldn't get a job in her field because
she lost her sh.t. I got her a job at the Montreal Heart Institute.
She lasted 6 weeks. Someone disagreed with her and she freaked out.

>"Peace Corps volunteer who loved African people"

She dropped out after a few months. Couldn't hack it.

>"a social worker who dealt with the worst in humanity"

She did this ofr a couple of months. She used the money to buy drugs.

>"Her life was tragic, and her death was more so."

No, it was a release.

Yes. She was hardly a saint though I cared for her as long as I was
able to care.

"Mirrors are so vulgar--mocking as you pose the question--whining back at
you in some made up voice."

By her writings, me thinks she was on the edge.
How to pull one like her back into normal?  I have a dear friend that is
schizophrenic, which is in remittance now, thank God, but it will come back.
And when it was here..............

Put together a book of her writings, for your peace, then let her rest, it
has been two years.

(?)

From A Health Volunteer Who Left Early

I was a health and community development volunteer in a small village 35 km
east of Kankan, the regional capital of Haute Guinea. There are eleven
villages in the sous-prefecture of Missamana. The center village has a
population of 1,500.

The first month I went to the health center every day, or visited the
outlying villages for vaccination tourneys. During the next few months, I
focused on getting to know the community outside the health center. I
visited and gave health talks at the primary school and NAFA Center, went to
the fields during harvest and land clearing times, washed clothes with women
at the river. Missamana is a beautiful place; the villagers and health
center staff are friendly, motivated people; I had no major problems.
However, after being at site for four and a half months, I have decided to
terminate service. Why am I leaving ?

The health program involves a lot of down time. Indeed, most of the time
"work" is equivalent to hanging out in the village--chatting, dancing,
sharing meals. From the knowledge you gain and the connection you form with
your community emerges the shape of your work. This is a slow process. There
are many long hours spent wondering and figuring out "Why am I here?" This
question relates not only to your place and purpose in the community, but to
you personally. What do you want from your Peace Corps experience? Take a
moment to be selfish, and think about what you hope to get out of service in
Guinea. Is this enough to keep you motivated in a program that lacks
definite structure and purpose?

My goals for the future have shifted since coming to Guinea. The stagnant
time in the village became frustrating, and I realized that the desire to
move on would torment my service. ("Why am I here?" becomes a nagging
question unless you have a solid answer to chase it away.) This has been one
of the hardest decisions I have ever made--no choice could be free from
regret. These months in Guinea have been a time of unmatched growth and
exposure . I leave with a small sense of what I will be missing, and the
pain of never truly knowing what I have lost.

She was schizophrenic. When we met she was in her bubbly mood. Next
came her dark suicidal mood which was followed by her intellectual
phase. She could absorb quite a bit during these manic periods.
Unfortunately, she'd sit at the computer and post to usenet until she
started to smell then she'd slip into her angry mood which was as
often as not followed by her 'my parents sold me to the CIA for
experimental purposes' mood.  She grew up watching her parents snort
coke with rock stars and she died surrounded by another kind of rock.

She was dead long before her body admitted it.

It doesn't say how she died but it sounds pretty gloomy.

Did she take her own life?

If so, what does this mean: "... she was able to see through

what kept everyone else ensnared ..."?  (In addition to

being presumptuous about "everyone else",) Was that a good

thing or not?

I never found out but I've always assumed that she finally was
successful in an attempt to kill herself. There were no murder stories
in the papers and her parents didn't pay for an obituary. Her father
is a failed propmaster (some neat movies and shows - you'd recognize
all of them). He had major problems with alcohol and drugs, a problem
she shared. She drank at least 1/2 liter of tequila or vodka a day and
you couldn't really tell she was toasted most of the time.

She was my attempt to recapture my lost 20's after a crappy marriage.
I used to laugh at middle aged guys who did that. Now I wonder how
much they'll lose.

5 years later I'm remarried, I have my kids back full time, and I'm
Ilya is still living with his mommy.

The darkest misfortune she ever has had is evidently having
someone like you or those who set up that site praising her.
It really bury her.

Why don't you cut the bullshit and give us a paragraph
explaining what she did, etc. Otherwise go do yourself
instead of praising someone you don't know.

Umm, why are you posting this Ilya? Those who knew her saw the page a
year or so ago. Frankly, it's crossed my mind that you might "go to
town" when looking at that picture of her (I took it in Paris in the
summer of 1999).

My condolences to you and your friend's family. She suffered from
depression, no? So many bright minds and promising scientists have taken
their own life. Its sad. There is help. Don't bother with professional head
shrinkers or phychologists (head shrinker that proscribes pills).

Chemistry has helped save my life from my own hands.

Venlafaxine hydrochloride has been a miracle drug for me.

Just imagine what the world would be like...

If Tesla had a friend
If Bridgeman had oxycotin
If Eastman,  Boltzmann, and Coes had Venlafaxine Hydrochoride...

The path of knowledge is littered with burnt out lives and bodys of the self
taken.

God Bless and be safe.

Well, he did have those pigeons, you know.....
I think people were somewhat hesitant to get friendly with him as he
tended to keep one hand in his pocket all the time, and rumor had it
that if he shook your hand with _that_ hand, you would be
electrocuted...by the deadly Alternating Current, no less. :-)
