Usenet - spam is not the only issue, what about content?
Imagine you are a amateur astronomer with an interest in variable
stars.
If you REALLY want to find out more about this area of amateur
astronomy then reading a discussion group that specialises in
variable
stars is surely the way to go. The number of variable star postings
and variable star astronomers to be found within sci.astro is tiny so
being able to filter out the spam in this group doesn't really help
you if what you are looking for doesn't exist here!
I suspect the same principle applies to almost every sub-section of
the hobby.
