Hello to the group. I have been taking a few pictures of the constellations
with my 35mm minolta film camera. I have an etx-60at and was reading the
manual on photography. It states the Meade ETX scopes are not good enough
for deepsky photography,Im assuming it means prime focus. Im wondering if it
would be good enough for deepsky piggyback photography with say just a 50mm
lens given the exposure time of say fifty minutes or longer.

Thanks for any input.  Jim

If you have a decent mount and can use a reticulated eyepiece in order to
do guiding through the main scope, you should have satisfactory results.
It might take some experimentation to get used to it.

so what is the real issue with the ETX's and deepsky photograpy  ???
I thought I read it had to do wiht the alt/az mount and the lack of scope
rotation
during long tracking episodes.  Which is interesting since I thought the
ETX's mount
could be used in an EQ mode

Not all ETXs have the same mount.  ETX-90/105/125 can be used EQ.  I
believe not the same for the others.

Ok -- but is it the EQ vs Az /el problem or is there something else
fundamentally wrong with the ETXs ?

See Weasner's Meade ETX site -
http://www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html

- and his astrophoto guestbook -
http://www.weasner.com/etx/guests/2006/guests_deepsky.html

The pictures there are not the best, but still it looks like a useable
platform for learning.

I don't own one.
