So is it just me, or does that dark splotch on the one side of Mars look
sort of like a stylized horse galloping?

What I saw the other night looked more like a grazing camel
(bactrain-two hump) under a dark cloud.  Mars' day is about the same as
Earth's.  It doesn't always present the same face to us.  In fact it
changes noticeably over a several hour observing session.  In addition,
dust storms have been blowing around the planet for the last week or so
further changing its appearance, so your horse galloped across Mars'
surface to be replaced by some other beast.  :-)
